Very exciting game, and yet another comeback win against Nebraska.

As a usual note, a few weeks ago, I added a stat for "Successful Play" percentage. Completely arbitrary, of course. A play is considered successful if:

On first down, it must gain at least 40% of the needed distance. E.g., on 1st and 10, a successful play would need to gain 4 yards or more.
On second down, it must gain at least two thirds the needed distance. E.g., on 2nd and 9, a successful play would need to gain 6 yards or more.
On third and fourth downs, a successful play would obviously have to gain at least the entire needed distance.

Texas' overall successful play percentage in this one was a not so great 45%. Below Texas' 50.4% season average.

Nebraksa's was 42.8%, which is EXACTLY the Texas' season opponents' average so far. In fact, almost down to the hundredth of a percent.

Another interesting stat is series conversion -- the immediate short term goal of most or all plays.

Texas converted 68.6% of its 35 series, well below that against Baylor( 83.8%). 48.6% were converted on first or second down, so that they didn't have to go to a third down, where a drop or miscue can force a punt. It broke down as the following:

ABC's coverage was absolutely horrible. Just horrendous. And especially embarrassing given the huge geographic coverage this "regional" game received.

I counted at least 14 instances where ABC missed the first part, or the entire, play. Seriously. A network there to televise a game missed all or part of 14 fucking (excuse me) plays of a game at which it likely brought 10+ cameras. Simply incredible.

Many times, it was while staying with a face iso or torso up closeup of a coach or player. Right through the snap of the ball and into the play. Or a graphic on trivia. And forget even considering watching the players line up, go in motion, fake a blitz, etc. That's out of the question on probably half the plays with ABC.

The shot of Bevo above -- again this is right over live play -- actually took up the ENTIRE PLAY. The viewers had no idea what happened on the field for the play run by the college football players ABC was purportedly covering. One actually had to log onto the fucking internet to see what happened. Click below to watch it:

This was signifcantly worse than even FSN.

Moreover, look at the amount of the screen ABC completely wastes with that ridiculous rolling text crap at the bottom. It's over 10% of of the screen area (50 of 480 pixels). It's actually over double the height of the text it's showing and also 30% wider than that text. It's mostly just dead black space, with some red tinge effect.

Think about the absolutetly inane thought process here: ABC is affirmatively attempting to occupy a huge chunk of their own picture with dead black space. Not text or scores for most of it. Not the game. Not even advertising. Just absolutely unused black space. Just look at the random pics above.

Moreover, they actually run this dead black box over the screen throughout the entire game. If this were in China or Venezuela, one would immediately assume such laughable inefficiency to be the product of a state decree. But it's just Disney. The weirdest thing is that, once you've purposeefully created vast amounts of dead black space for hours in a row on the screen of a national TV network, why not at least jam product advertising over it? I can't explain it. In fact, I can't even approach explaining it.

Oh, and the text. With the completely random survey above (screenshots from crap during live play), it includes such helpful items as "ESPN HORSE ABC." Or "HOFSTRA 14 VILLANOVA 21." For the millions demanding that this score be shown on a random TV screen televising a Big 12 game, of course.

Then there's ABC "Analyst" Ed Cunningham, who weekly sounds as if this is the first college football game he's ever broadcast. He's often clueless about the rules, doesn't know the objective of certain plays and regularly states just wacky things about players. Even the great Ron Franklin -- maybe my favorite college football broadcaster -- had a few gaffes in this one.

Finally, as an overall reminder, this isn't a page with suggestions on fixing things, what players are better, etc.

I'm not a coach, or even anyone particularly knowledgeable about football. Just a long time fan that likes watching the game. These are just videoclips and observations of what happened during the game.

To describe some things that happen, there is some reference to "gaps" and "techs" to describe assignments and where defenders line up. This is football coaching terminology, not my own. Texas called passing plays 43.7% of the time throughout the game. That's the lowest of the year, including the Rice game (46.4%), where Texas spent most of the second half running the clock.

The successful play percentage for the passing game was a terrible 34.2%. That's over 10% lower than every other game this year, besides KSU (28%).

Nebraska blitzed on an astounding 82.8% of pass plays. Which is simply incredible. The only team that had blitzed Texas before for more than 34% of pass plays, was Rice (50%). Texas' successful pass play percentage on Nebraska blitzes was even lower than the overall average, at 31.0%. The 82.8% figure might differ from the coaching staff's figures becaue I'm counting blitzes only on what appear to be called pass plays (not all plays).

Only 28.7% of throws traveled more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage in the air, but this is likely misleading in this game. There were fewer passes than most, and probably more scrambles for yardage and throwing away the ball, both of which counted for 0 yard throw distances in my spreadsheet. The average throw was actually 9.14 yards past the line of scrimmage, which is raised a bit by some long passes.

Most of the passing came out of the 3WR shotgun formation again. The 77.1% figure is very close to Texas' season average.

For the figures above, if Texas drew a pass interference on a pass play, I counted it as gaining 15 yards.

Texas again bent Finley over on the line of scimmage on their former 5WR shotgun formation to make it a 4WR-1TE formation the way I've categorized it.

Texas employed a new formation. It was a 2WR formation with 2 splitbacks. Not with Chiles for a trick play, but for pass protection. Here is a pic:

I think we might be seeing more of it in the future. Fullback Luke Tiemann was the other splitback. On that one play, Nebraska employed three downed lineman, but brought blitzers in the strong C and D gaps. The back took a blitzer. Finley actually stayed in to block, but wasn't needed. The protection gave McCoy all day, and he found weak split end Cosby who ran a long cross 20 yards deep to the strong side of the field, for a gain of 31 yards. The formation also can allow Jermichael Finley to either remain in protection or sneak out for a pass with FB Tiemann blocking strongside.

Texas had three pass plays gain 30 yards or more in the game. All three were to Cosby. That's not to say that Cosby smoked Nebraska's defenders at all. In fact, there were several plays where Nebraska appeared to have pretty good coverage, including on Texas' longest pass play.

My thoughts originally watching the game were that Nebraska was regularly blasting through Texas' pass protection, causing lots of problems for McCoy. Upon review, my initial thoughts turned out to be bullshit. Watching each play again, Texas actually generally provided pretty good protection for several seconds, even on blitzes. There were certainly breakdowns, but they were not nearly as pervasive as I'd remembered. Especially with Nebraska's incredible 82.8% blitz rate on pass plays.

In addition, many McCoy scrambles were his decision without any pressure. Sometimes this is to pick up running yards, and sometimes not. Even in the latter situation, this is not necessarily a bad decision by McCoy. It might just be the product of thinking one move ahead. For example, he might see some receiver opening that might develop and also sees an opportunity to maneuver strong or weakside to give him a run lane if no route shakes open. So he chooses to scramble to one side to give him an option he might not have if he waits five more seconds.

The following were all of the plays I found where McCoy scrambled for yardage or was pressured.

Texas called run plays 56.2% of the time. Their season high.

The running play "successful play" rate was a pretty good 53.3% overall. It was almost right at their season average (54.1%), and they obviously busted some huge runs at the end.

Texas ran a lot out of the I-Formation early with limited success -- not terrible, but not outstanding. Things really picked up when they ran out of the 3WR shotgun formation more later.

All five I-Formation 2TE runs were the last five plays of the game, running out the clock.

You might be wondering about short yardage runs. There weren't any. Well, there was one 3rd and 1 QB sneak for the first (out of the 3WR under center formation) but that was it. It was just odd. Texas only had one 3rd and 1 and one 3rd and 2, the whole game. They ran on one and passed on the other.

Nebraska throughout the game at times employed some very weird looking three downed lineman formation, but it was nothing like a regular 3-4. Some coach might be able to identify this, but I certainly can't. They lined up two DLs in even techs (looks like responsible for 2 gaps) and one in an odd tech. A DL linedup up right on the center (0 Tech), a DT over the weak guard (2 Tech) and then a third DL in the strong B gap, in what looks like a 3 tech. Then they stood up a DE in the weak C gap, like a linebacker (5 Tech). And another outside the TE in what looks like a 9 Tech (sometimes this guy was a LB, sometimes a DE standing up like a linebacker).

And, of course, they either blitzed or faked blitz on most plays. And usually had at least 8 players close to the line of scrimmage, as shown above.

Against Baylor, we'd run a lot more counters. Texas had been running more counter and CAG pulls lately. Not here. Lots of zone-blocked strong and zone-blocked weak runs.

Here's some weirdness for you. For the first 47 minutes of the game, we ran ONE zone-blocked strong, zone-blocked weak or QB counter-keeps (zone-reads or fakes opposite of main OL blocking) out of the 3WR shotgun formation. It was a zone blocked weak play on the first play of the game. Our first after that was with 13 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Before that, Texas' only 3WR shotgun formation runs (besides the one zone wk) were two options, two counters (OG-OT weak), a draw and a roll draw.

To be clear, we did run a lot of zone-blocked strong and zone-blocked weak plays before the fourth quarter. But they were mostly out of the I-Formation, not the 3WR shotgun formation.

After getting the ball back down 17-9, Texas immediately came out in a 2TE shotgun formation, which it hadn't yet employed in the game. They faked a zone-blocked weak run out of the shotgun, which they'd very rarely done earlier. Nebraska's line bit on it. McCoy kept, and he wanted a long fade, but it wasn't open, so he threw it away long.

McCoy was injured on that play, and Chiles came in. Texas for a second play in a row stuck with the shotgun and again showed a zone-blocked play. This time, they actually had Charles keep. Nebraska played that 3WR shotgun formation with the 3 DL formation above. They caught the MLB going over a gap strong and Octavien going over a gap weak, leaving the weak A gap wide open. Charles ran through an Octavien ankle tackle, sprinted downfield, stiff-armed a DB and gained 25 yards.

McCoy came in next play. Perhaps Nebraska was somehow channeling the dull thoughts of ABC analyst Special Ed Cunningham, who seemed to think Colt's injuries exit from the game a play earlier was related to the slight concussion he had in the KSU game and insisted he wouldn't be effective running. Nebraska blitzed, including Octavien in the weak C gap. Texas ran a zone-blocked strong play. McCoy kept it. I think this was a planned keep all along. Why do I think that? Because Charles didn't even start running strong, and instead, immediately curled back weak with Colt to block the DE or whatever the hell you call that DL they lined up in the weak B gap. That's exactly where Colt took it, running at the end through two tackles for yards, and immediately popping up to fire up the team. So much for Special Ed's prognosis. 25 yard gain.

After that, a healthy dose of zone-blocked strong & weak runs, with QB counter keeps (zone-read or just fakes) were mixed in, mostly out of the 3WR formation. After Texas got a lead, they ran clock again out of the I-Formation. It didn't work as well, though Charles gained 16 yards when it looked like he'd be dropped for a loss.
